Enhanced Sligo Town Bus Services

The National Transport Authority (NTA), in partnership with Bus Éireann, has launched the new S3 route as part of the Sligo Town Bus Service expansion.

The National Transport Authority (NTA), in partnership with Bus Éireann, has launched the new S3 route as part of the Sligo Town Bus Service expansion.

Passengers will benefit from the new S3 route, which will run hourly between Markievicz Road and Finisklin, seven days a week which began on Sunday, 2 February. The service will offer seventeen daily trips from Monday to Saturday and fifteen daily trips on Sundays. The S3 aims to enhance connectivity for commuters traveling for work, education, leisure, and onward connections via bus and rail.

In addition to the new S3 route, passengers on existing routes S1 and S2 will see significant improvements.

Route S1, which serves Cartron to Cairns Road, will now include hourly evening services from 18:30 to midnight, operating seven days a week. Two new stops have been added (Southbound) at Hollymount and Clarion Village, improving access to ATU Sligo and surrounding areas.

Route S2, connecting Strandhill and Rosses Point, will follow a revised route with new stops at Rosses Point Promenade, Oyster Island, and an additional stop at Wine Street (from Strandhill to Rosses Point).

The NTA and Bus Éireann are committed to ensuring Sligo’s Town Bus Service is fully accessible, providing a convenient and reliable transport option for all members of the community and underpinning our belief in accessible public transport for all.

This enhanced public transport offering underscores the NTA and Bus Éireann’s commitment to supporting regional growth, sustainability, and community connectivity. While the S3 service launched on 2 February, the route will require further infrastructure works and we kindly ask for the public’s patience until these works are completed.

Speaking at the launch Sligo Mayor Cllr Tom MacSharry said:

“On behalf of the members of Sligo County Council, I am delighted to welcome the introduction of the new S3 bus route in Sligo town. This marks an important milestone in improving public transport here in Sligo. We acknowledge the hard work and dedication, of residents, particularly Maura Gilmartin, who campaigned tirelessly over many years, and County Councillors, the National Roads Authority and the hard-working Engineering Staff of Sligo County Council as well as Bus Éireann whose efforts have made this possible.   It is crucially important that we now use the new S3 bus, and I would encourage everyone to give it a go.”

Allen Parker, Chief Customer Officer of Bus Éireann said:

“Bus Éireann is delighted to introduce these improved services in Sligo, significantly increasing transport options for passengers in the region. These improvements will particularly positively impact those commuting to the town centre for work, leisure, health and education. These updates are the result of a strong collaboration between the NTA and Bus Éireann to enhance connectivity across the country and deliver an affordable, reliable and sustainable bus service for communities throughout Ireland, helping to make life better.”

Speaking on the launch, Jeremy Ryan, Director of Public Transport Services added:

“We are proud to support the expansion of Sligo’s Town Bus Service with these new and improved routes. Enhancing public transport options is central to our mission of delivering sustainable mobility solutions for all. These updates will make it easier for people in Sligo to access education, work, leisure, and onward connections while reducing the region’s carbon footprint."
