Bus Éireann boost Drogheda local economy by €4.5 million in 2019

In conjunction with the National Transport Authority (NTA), Bus Éireann boosted its service offering to customers in Drogheda in 2019 with the introduction of new and enhanced services. Drogheda customer usage on town services is well ahead of expectation while demand on the commuter route to Dublin is also performing strongly.

Bus Éireann employs 91 people in Drogheda and contributed in excess of €4.5m to the local economy in 2019. This included payments to a large number of local suppliers across the county.

Following a review of public transport services in Drogheda in conjunction with the National Transport Authority (NTA), Bus Éireann announced improvements recently to its D1, D2 and Route 101 services. These changes have provided customers with an improved level of service offering including more frequent services and increased reliability.

Since the recent introduction of the improvements to D1, D1 and Route 101, there has been a very positive reaction from the general public.

Frequency on D1 and D2 have more than doubled between Drogheda and Laytown providing a combined 15 minute frequency during the day.New D1 & D2 services in Drogheda

  • The Route D1 operates between Drogheda and Laytown
  • The Route D2 operates between Drogheda and Laytown via Golf Links Road
  • The combined D1 and D2 timetables provides a high frequency service linking Laytown and Bettystown to Drogheda up to every 15 minutes (Monday to Sunday).

Some of the main service enhancements are as follows:

  • 136% frequency increase between Drogheda/Laytown and Bettystown
  • 15 minute frequency on D1 and D2 combined services
  • Increased hours of operation 7 days a week
  • Early morning service from Drogheda departing at 05.20am weekday
  • Early morning service from Laytown departing at 06.00am weekday

During 2019, Bus Éireann also introduced service enhancements to the Route 101 service, which operates from Drogheda-Balbriggan-Dublin Airport-Dublin city centre.

The main service enhancements are as follows:

  • New 4am daily departure from Drogheda, ideal for customers getting early flights or working at Dublin Airport/Dublin city centre
  • A service departing Drogheda every 20 minutes from 5am-8am Monday to Friday
  • Last service from Drogheda is at midnight
  • A service departing Dublin city centre every 20 minutes from 14.45 until 19.15 Monday to Friday
  • Increased late evening departures daily from Dublin city centre with services every hour from 20.30 until 01.30am

As part of the enhancements to Drogheda, Bus Éireann also got a delivery of 5 new state-of-the-art buses. All vehicles are fully wheelchair accessible and feature the Transport for Ireland (TFI) livery.
