Ballina – Castlebar – Westport – Galway corridor service improvements

Bus Éireann in conjunction with the National Transport Authority are pleased to announce the introduction of an enhanced bus service for our customers in Co Galway & Mayo along the Ballina – Castlebar – Westport – Galway  Corridor and in particular the towns of Westport, Castlebar, Cong, Headford & Ballinrobe. This follows a National Transport Authority review of services in Co. Mayo and takes account of changes to other services operated along this corridor.

The enhanced services will be introduced on Sunday, 1 July 2018.

How are my bus services changing?

This service change will see the current Route 456: Ballina – Westport - Galway divided into 3 separate routes which will individually focus on certain sections of the corridor to provide an enhanced service offering including higher frequency, longer operating hours and customer focused services to all our customers along the whole corridor.

The enhanced route offering is summarized below and detailed timetables are available at www.buseireann.ie/Mayo

Route 420: Castlebar – Pontoon – Ballina

This service will provide 3 return services daily via Pontoon linking Castlebar to Ballina. Services will operate every day including weekends & Public Holidays. Expressway Route 52 also provides 6 daily return services between Castlebar & Ballina.

Route 422: Castlebar – Cong – Headford

This service will provide 3 return services daily via Cong linking Castlebar to Headford where customers can interchange onto Route 456 or Expressway Route 52 services to complete their journey to Galway. Services will operate every day including weekends & Public Holidays.

Route 456: Castlebar – Westport – Ballinrobe – Kilmaine – Headford - Galway

This service will provide 5 return services daily linking Castlebar to Galway via Kilmaine & Headford. Services will operate every day including weekends & Public Holidays. Expressway Route 52 also provides 6 daily return services between Castlebar & Ballina.

A summary of how these service enhancements will impact on your individual towns is outlined:

Westport

  • Westport to Galway – Your service will be Route 456 which will provide 5 daily services to/from the City Centre.
  • Westport to Ballina - Route 440 & 456 will provided a regular daily service to/from Castlebar where customers can transfer onto services to/from Ballina.

Castlebar

  • Castlebar to Galway – Your service will be Route 456 which will provide 5 daily services to/from the City Centre. Route 422 will also provide 3 daily services to/from Headford.
  • Castlebar to Westport - Route 440 & 456 will provided a regular daily service to/from Westport.
  • Castlebar to Ballina – Route 420 and Expressway Route 52 will provided 9 daily service to/from Ballina.

Ballinrobe

  • Ballinrobe to Galway – Your service will be Route 456 which will provide 5 daily services to/from the City Centre.
  • Ballinrobe to Ballina – Your service will be Route 456 which will provide 5 daily services to/from Castlebar where you can interchange on Expressway Route 52.

Cong

  • Cong to Galway – Your service will be Route 422 which will provide 3 daily services to/from Headford where you can interchange onto Route 456 to complete your journey to Galway.
  • Cong to Ballina – Your service will be Route 422 which will provide 3 daily services to/from Castlebar where you interchange onto Routes 420, 440 & Expressway Route 52 to travel to locations such as Westport & Ballina.
